Jolene McIlwain presents SIDLE CREEK, with April Bradley, Beth Gilstrap, Nazanin Knudsen & Heather Bell Adams at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

This talented panel of authors will read from their recent works -- 5 authors, 5 minute readings each -- followed by an evening of conversation to celebrate the recent publication of McIlwain's debut short story collection, Sidle Creek. Set in the bruised, mined, and timbered hills of Appalachia in western Pennsylvania, Sidle Creek is a tender, truthful exploration of a small town and the people who live there, told by a brilliant new voice in fiction. In Sidle Creek, McIlwain skillfully interrogates the myths and stereotypes of the mining, mill, and farming towns where she grew up. With stories that take place in diners and dive bars, town halls and bait shops, McIlwain’s writing explores themes of class, work, health, and trauma, and the unexpected human connections of small, close-knit communities. All the while, the wild beauty of the natural world weaves its way in, a source of the town’s livelihood – and vulnerable to natural resource exploitation. Jolene McIlwain’s writing appears widely in literary journals and the Best Small Fictions anthology. Her writing has been nominated for several Pushcarts and she was named finalist for Best of the Net, Glimmer Train’s New Writer’s Award, and Arts & Letters Unclassifiables contest. Jolene was also a semifinalist in Nimrod’s Katherine Anne Porter Prize and both American Short Fiction’s Short and Short(er) Fiction contests. Her debut short story collection, SIDLE CREEK, was published this spring by Melville House. It has received a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly and reviews from The Associated Press and NPR. Jolene McIlwain was born, raised, and currently lives in western PA. April Bradley is a Durham, North Carolina-based writer and editor. Her writing appears in Blink Ink, Cheap Pop, CRAFT, Gone Lawn, Heavy Feather Review, jmww, Journal of Compressed Creative Arts, Narratively, and SmokeLong Quarterly, among others. […]

MYSTERY WRITER PANEL with Ellery Adams, Marjorie McCown, and Victoria Gilbert at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

Join us for a thrilling evening of fun as we welcome three incredible mystery authors. The event will feature conversation between authors Marjorie McCown, Victoria Gilbert, and Ellery Adams. Marjorie McCown has spent her entire professional life in the story-telling business, though she started out on the visual side of the craft. A Midwesterner by birth, she earned a BA in Theater from the University of Virginia and an AAS in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City where she began her career designing costumes for theater and opera. She made her reputation designing for opera and theater companies all over the country, including the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center, before she moved to Los Angeles to work on feature films. Victoria Gilbert, raised in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, turned her early obsession with reading into a dual career as an author and librarian. She writes both traditional and cozy mysteries. She’s also written fantasy and science fiction. Victoria has worked as a reference librarian, research librarian, and library director. When not writing or reading, she likes to spend her time watching films or TV, gardening, or traveling. She loves animals, chocolate, and all the arts. Ellery Adams is the New York Times bestselling author of two cookbooks and over thirty mysteries, including the Book Retreat Mysteries, The Secret, Book, & Scone Society series, the Books by the Bay Mysteries, and the Charmed Pie Shoppe Mysteries. A native New Yorker, she has had a lifelong love affair with stories, food, rescue animals, and large bodies of water. When not working on her next novel, she reads, bakes, gardens, spoils her three cats, and rearranges her bookshelves. She lives with her husband and two children in Chapel Hill, NC.

Lauren Yero presents UNDER THIS FORGETFUL SKY with Scott Reintgen at Flyleaf Books

Flyleaf Books 752 MLK Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC

In the spirit of Paolo Bacigalupi and Laini Taylor, this futuristic star-crossed love story follows two teens in a starkly unequal world struggling to find their place. Sixteen-year-old Rumi Sabzwari has spent his entire life behind the armored walls of St. Iago, which protect citizens of the Union of Upper Cities from the outside world’s environmental devastation. But when rebels infect his father with a fatal virus, Rumi escapes St. Iago, desperate to find a cure. In the ruined city of Paraíso, Rumi meets fifteen-year-old Paz, who agrees to guide him on his journey. As they travel together, Rumi finds himself drawn to Paz—and behind her tough exterior, she begins to feel the same way. But Paz knows more about Rumi’s father’s illness than she’s saying and has her own agenda. With the powerful forces at play in their cities putting them at odds, can the two learn to trust in each other—enough to imagine a different world? Lauren Yero is a Cuban American writer who was born in Florida and now lives in the mountains of western North Carolina. Her desire to connect more deeply with her Cuban roots led her to study and work throughout the Spanish-speaking world—including Chile, where she drew inspiration for her debut novel, Under This Forgetful Sky. In addition to writing, she works as a teacher and shares a small homestead with her husband, two kids, two pups, ten chickens, five geese, two ducks, and a couple hundred thousand honeybees. Scott Reintgen is a former public school teacher and still spends summers teaching middle schoolers dark fiction and fantasy at Duke Young Writers’ Camp. The birth of his children has convinced him that magic is actually real. He lives in North Carolina, surviving mostly on cookie dough and the love of his wife, Katie. […]
