Huckleberry Trail Farm

What’s in a name? Where did the name of our farm come from? Well, it didn’t come from the huckleberries growing wild on the land. Huckleberries don’t do well in the South (we know because we’ve researched it thinking maybe we should have some growing on the farm if we were going to put them in our name). Our name comes from what comes to mind when most people hear the word huckleberry-Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. It was a favorite bedtime reading book of our son, Robert, growing up. Between the story of Tom and Huck’s adventures were many lessons to be discussed and learned. We also decided to pay homage to the old wagon trail running along the back of our property. And that is how Huckleberry Trail Farm was born….. huckleberrytrailfarm.com Location 143 Pleasant Hill Church Road Siler City, NC 27344 Hours: In 2019, the farm was open to the public every weekend beginning September 28 1 through Sunday, October 27, with a special home schooler day on October 31. The pandemic changed things in 2020 and 2021. Look for a similar schedule in 2022. Our regular hours are: Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm (last admission is 5:00, last hay ride is 5:30) Sundays 1 pm to 6 pm (last admission is 5:00, last hay ride is 5:30) The farm is available for special events by arrangement. Hewitt Pottery Fall 2021 Kiln Opening

Mark Hewitt Pottery

Pittsboro’s W.M. Hewitt Pottery Studio is famous for its functional, wood-fired pottery that uses local North Carolina stoneware clays. Mark Hewitt was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England. He is the son and grandson of directors of Spode, the fine china manufacturers. As a student at Bristol University in the early 1970’s, Mark read Bernard Leach’s “A Potter’s Book” and decided to become a studio potter. This led to a three-year apprenticeship with Michael Cardew, and later another with Todd Piker in Connecticut, where Mark met his wife, Carol. In 1983 they moved to Pittsboro and set up their pottery. Mark built a very large wood kiln and began making the distinctive functional pots, specializing in large planters and jars, along with finely made smaller items. He uses local clays and blends  different North Carolinian folk traditions together into a contemporary style. His work has been featured in Smithsonian magazine and on the cover of American Craft magazine. Mark has written extensively in the ceramic press and has exhibited in London, New York and Tokyo, as well as throughout the US. He is well-represented in museum and private collections. www.hewittpottery.com Location 424 Johnny Burke Rd.
