Acupuncture – Chinese Medicine in Pittsboro NC

Acupuncture is a type of Chinese Medicine (over 3000 yrs old) which stimulates the natural healing process of the body in order to fight disease.  Acupuncture is based on the premise that “Qi” ( vital energy) and blood flow through channels or meridians in our body.  There are 12 main meridians, each often times associated with an organ. Many times this Qi/ blood becomes stuck due to various factors such as injury, disease, stress, diet, lifestyle etc.  When this stagnation occurs, vital organs and cells are without nourishment.  In addition, one’s own Qi/blood may become depleted, again creating a situation where organs and cells are not being properly nourished.  This can result in pain, disease, and unbalanced functioning. With acupuncture, tiny, hair thin needles are inserted into the skin to stimulate and release this blockage, or to tonify/ strengthen the deficient Qi/ blood.  The selection of points to stimulate depends on the patient’s diagnosis or symptoms. Commonly asked Questions: 1) Does it hurt? Every individual feels something different.  Some people do not feel any sensation upon needle insertion while others report a slight pinch or heavy sensation. 2) What are needles made of? Needles can be made from gold, silver, silicone or stainless steel. 3) How long are the needles left in? This depends on the patient’s constitution, age, pattern and diagnosis. 4) Are the same needles re-inserted? No.  I only use new, sterile needles. 5) What does acupuncture treat? Acupuncture treats many conditions: colds, flu, asthma and bronchitis, EENT, Fertility, Genitourinary, GI, Mental/ Emotional, Musculoskeletal, Male and Female imbalances, Neurological, Stress etc. 6) How often do I need to have acupuncture? This depends on the individual and his/her diagnosis/pattern.  The practitioner will assess the patient’s needs after completing an in-depth evaluation.  However, in the beginning, there is often a […]
